An old school classic with a modern twist, the artistic team behind the Australian Shakespeare Company has brought their hilarious take of the timeless fairy tale to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
In the charming retelling, humble country boy Jack, (played by Grace Holroyd) and his ambitious mother (Dennis Manahan) sends Jack off to the market to sell his best friend Daisy the Cow where he is met by his fairy godmother (Wendy Stapleton) and trades Daisy for five magic beans.
When the beans turn out to be magical indeed it is up to Jack to prove his bravery, save the day and win the girl.
Jack and the Beanstalk has all the classic makings of pantomime and is a delight for both children and adults. Written by ASC creative director and founder Glenn Elston with music by Paul Norton the cast are an animated bunch that keep the story moving with music and laughter.
Narrated by Richard Piper the show delivers a cheeky element that will please adult audiences as Piper touches on controversial and relevant material while still appealing to the young audience with his bumbling on stage persona.
Joined onstage by Mike Bishop as the Earl (cue over the top booing) and Madeleine Somers as Jill (Jack’s love interest) and with a classic performance from Fletcher O’Leary as the unwitting henchman and gloriously sassy golden harp, Jack and the Beanstalk proves we are never too old for a classic fairy tale, or in deed a good laugh. The story is comforting and familiar and the performances will make you giggle regardless of your vintage.
